AUTOLYSIS: the destruction of cells or tissues by their own enzymes, especially those released by lysosomes, an organelle in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells containing degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane.

Recorded in February 2020 – happily unaware of the Corona crisis that was knocking at the door – this album is the culmination of Danish bassist Asger Thomsen’s desire to combine simple musical structures and abstract expressive improvisation.

Featuring players with varying improvisational backgrounds, the music on Autolysis has its roots in both the European free improvisation and free jazz traditions. The music’s direction shifts naturally between narrative, melodic modes, and sound-oriented group improvisation.

“As a bassist, composer, & improviser, Asger’s concept is always evolving. I’m proud to support his work as a friend & collaborator, and now to present it as the owner of a record label. An exciting addition to the catalogue.”
